Why aren't more lefties like Alit Karp? - by Dr. Aaron Lerner

...Karp observes that the way to truly change policy in a democratic country like Israel is to convince enough Israeli voters to support your position. That's right. Not convince Washington. Nor the UN. Its convince Israeli voters. She is absolutely right.

Israeli Alit Karp apparently is convinced that Israel's best interests would be served by the creation of a sovereign independent Palestinian state in every square inch beyond the Green Line.

No doubt about it. She's a lefty.

But while we don't agree on policy we most certainly agree on the democratic process.

And that's why it was so refreshing to read her op ed in the 25 October edition of Haaretz "Israel's National Theater Must Perform in Kiryat Arba."

Karp slams her fellow lefties for supporting boycotts so that they can tell themselves they've done something "against the occupation" rather than seriously participate in the democratic process.

Karp observes that the way to truly change policy in a democratic country like Israel is to convince enough Israeli voters to support your position.

That's right.

Not convince Washington.

Nor the UN.

Its convince Israeli voters.

She is absolutely right.

And you know what? If the day comes that she succeeds in convincing the Israeli electorate to vote in a ruling majority that supports what I consider to be a truly catastrophic policy I will continue to agree with her about the democratic process.

It's the only game in town.
